The first season of hit musical drama series Empire recently ended.

Although the show’s been renewed for a second season, veteran actor Malik Yoba is one person who won’t be returning. His character, Vernon Turner, was killed off in Empire‘s season finale.

Yoba chopped it up with The Combat Jack Show about the show, and shared his thoughts on being eliminated from the cast.

He also talked about his twenty-plus-year acting career, which includes starring in Fox police drama New York Undercover, Cool Runnings, and Why Did I Get Married?.

His rough upbringing in New York, religious views, and extensive work with underprivileged youth are other topics Yoba discussed during the interview..

Following Yoba’s segment, a brief interview with music industry vet and author, Shanti Das, can be heard.

Das talked about helping break Southern-based artists like Outkast, Goodie Mob, Usher and TLC. And the hardships of being a woman in a male-dominated industry.

She also spoke on her book, The Hip-Hop Professional, community service efforts, and Silence the Shame — a new suicide awareness initiative.
