Marvin Gaye is one of the artists I enjoy listening to when I want to hear some peaceful and soul-touching vintage music.
One of my favorite albums by him is What’s Going On. Gaye released the album in 1971. At that time, police brutality, drug addiction, and economical hardship were all significant issues in America. On the album, he managed to touch on all of those dilemmas as well as sing about spirituality and the importance of loving family and friends.
To me, What’s Going On is a timeless classic; many of the societal dilemmas Gaye sings about on the album are still plaguing the world today. I can listen to the project nonstop, but some of my favorite songs on it are “What’s Going On,” “What’s Happening Brother,” “Flyin’ High,” and “Wholy Holy.”
I encourage anyone to check the album out, if they haven’t already heard it. Gaye’s voice is so soothing; the tranquil production on the project provides a balance to the unfortunate topics he croons about.
More than a decade after the album’s release, Gaye was shot and killed by his father on April 1st, 1984. It was the day before his 45th birthday. Although he’s no longer around physically, his music and legacy continues to live on.
Check out What’s Going On in its entirety below.
