Long before the label acquired worldwide acclaim and platinum plaques, Cash Money Records had a significant underground following.
Among others, Cash Money helped launch the careers of B.G., Juvenile, UNLV, Lil’ Wayne and Turk in the early ’90s. And the label was able to sell large numbers of units independently, creating a buzz that would bring forth a multimillion-dollar record deal and superstardom.
The Big Tymers, a now defunct group that consisted of Mannie Fresh and Baby (Birdman), enjoyed some success with their Cash Money debut How You Luv That. One of my favorite tracks off the project is the rags-to-riches vibe “Cutlass, Monte Carlos and Regals.” With assistance from Lil’ Wayne and Juvenile, Mannie and Baby reflect on their lives before the mass appeal and luxurious lifestyles.
