Slim Thug Talks Houston Rap, Joining Swishahouse and Independent Success

Swishahouse’s The Day Hell Broke Loose 2 introduced me to Houston rappers Mike Jones and Slim Thug, who both appeared on the album’s cut “Still Tippin.'”

Around that time I was heavy into Texas music, jammin’ everything from Lil’ Flip to Paul Wall and Chamillionaire and the list goes on.

Since the days of “Still Tippin’,” Slim Thug has gone from being an underground figure to someone recognized on a major scale. He has released multiple independent and major projects, appeared on memorable cuts like Beyoncé’s “Check On It,” and worked exclusively with Grammy award-winning artist/producer Pharell Williams

During an interview with Say Cheese TV, Slim Thug talked about everything from his humble upbringing in Houston to his prosperous music career.

He reflected on how he connected with Michael “5000” Watts and joined the legendary Swishahouse collective during his 11th grade year of high school.

Slim also reminisced on coming up during the “golden days of being a rapper,” a time when people didn’t rely on the Internet to access music. And he revealed how he was able to make a fortune off selling music independently.
